James Gunn Just Teased Blue Beetle in Peacemaker Season 2!

Alfredo Brown:

James Gunn says that Blue Beetle fits nicely into the DCEU. Welcome into Unvenged. I'm Alfredo Brown. Join as always. I've got Jagerme.

Alfredo Brown:

We're doing a quick news update episode here for you guys. And, Jag, I wanna read off the headline for you here. The exact quote from James Gunn in an interview with IMDb where he says, peacemaker, dot dot dot, Blue Beetle, dot dot dot, they just kind of fit in very nicely with the DCU. Maybe we have to retcon a couple of things. He's no stranger to retconning stuff already.

JaggerMay:

I just hope he deletes George Lopez because, like, full disclosure, I've never ever watched Blue Beetle, and it's like I'm not gonna lie. George Lopez is the number one reason. If he is in something you just know is probably gonna be a little bit cringe. But I like I guess this makes you for our two man show here, the de facto lore master as Cuban. And you've watched the movie in here.

JaggerMay:

What do you want to see retconned? And then I guess to make it fit.

Alfredo Brown:

I want so what I want, if they're I mean, they they can retcon whatever details from from the previous one. I I just kinda wanna see a Jaime Reyes that is a superhero that also happens to be Mexican. And when when I watched the movie, it was he was a Latino that happened to be a superhero. It felt like the defining thing about him was that he was Mexican. Like, that that's where everything was.

JaggerMay:

That's where his power came from is not from a Beatle, but from being Mexican.

Alfredo Brown:

It's like he was Oscar from The Office and Michael telling him, like, what makes you special is your Mexicanity.

JaggerMay:

We are

Alfredo Brown:

That's where we were with Jaime Reyes. And I was super excited because, like, oh, finally, we're okay. We're getting a Latino superhero. I'm I'm I'm about it. Let's go.

Alfredo Brown:

And I saw it, and I like the movie. I really enjoyed it. I'm not hating on the movie. I don't wanna, like, just turn it down from 11 a little bit. You know?

Alfredo Brown:

I think we're we're good if we turn it down to, a nine.

JaggerMay:

As as a black dude, from what? Because I've heard you describe it.

Alfredo Brown:

By the way, you don't have to say as a black dude. People can

JaggerMay:

Well, see just in case for audio side. No. It just like to me, that's exactly what I thought it was. It's like there's a George Lopez show that everyone loved and went to sleep to on Nick at Night. And then there's the three other ones that he got made.

JaggerMay:

It felt like this was like a fourth one. To quote you, was just George Lopez does DC. And like, to me, it's just like, I could just imagine that it's blue beetle and like a blue luchador mask. And like, they're gonna retcon like the Mexican flag as like a cape on it just because they're trying to compete with, like, Disney at that point.

Alfredo Brown:

I'll I'll say this. Like, the actual so the actor, Zolo Mariguena, was great in the role as Jaime Reyes. And the acting in the movie was actually pretty good. You haven't seen it, but, like, Susan Sarandon is essentially the main villain of this, and it it it plays out well. And there there's some other people, and I think there's some really cool directions that they can go with this once once this does become part of the DCU.

Alfredo Brown:

So like, I'm not knocking Blue Beetle at all. I'm actually really ecstatic that it that it could be part of the DCU. And I do want this version of Blue Beetle to be part of the DCU. My my question is this is is in that quote, James Gunn talks about how this kind of fits in similarly with Peacemaker. I'll read the quote one more time.

Alfredo Brown:

Peacemaker, Blue Beetle, they kind of just fit in very nicely with the DCU. That's the quote. Like, why why bring them up together if we're not gonna have him in a cameo in Peacemaker?

JaggerMay:

Well, let's theorize. We keep like Steve Aji keeps saying this. James Gunn's even said that his publicist hasn't read the script for the last three episodes of of peacemaker. Could this be something where we see him in the justice gang? If he I don't think he's gonna be, like, peacemaker gang, but if he's gonna interact with him like we see hot girl and and whatnot, that will be funny.

JaggerMay:

Honestly, I wanna see hot girl and, like, someone like like Hame interact together just in the peacemaker universe because you could just see that dynamic and how he could play out, there. It's like peacemaker is like the dirty playground after hours where you could smoke cigarettes with your friends in DC

Alfredo Brown:

Right? Okay. Okay. Peacemaker is

JaggerMay:

Twitter. It's basically Twitter.

Alfredo Brown:

Okay. Peacemaker's Twitter. What is Jaime? Is Jaime like TikTok then? Is that what

JaggerMay:

we're doing? Or TikTok. Yeah. Like, lot of dancing and shit like that, I could imagine.

Alfredo Brown:

This is the justice gang. Is that Facebook? Because the Guy Gardner, like, that feels very Facebook y.

JaggerMay:

What's up to the fringe? Reddit. No. It's like Right.

Alfredo Brown:

Okay. So the reason I asked this of, like, I I I do my theory is this, is I think they do the whole thing with Peacemaker going in for the interview with with the justice gang in episode one because they're recruiting. I think they're realizing they need to add more. I think the a great way to have a quick cameo is Blue Beetle sort of showing up towards the end of the season, even just a quick, like, boom. He lands, helmet comes off or whatever.

Alfredo Brown:

Maybe helmet doesn't. Don't know.

JaggerMay:

Little Beetle will return in Doomsday. No,

Alfredo Brown:

But we find out like that's who they hired. Right? And it's like, oh, yeah, good job, kid on your first mission or whatever, you know? And like, it's he's the kid of the group and like everyone else sort of fits. There's already a chemistry there.

Alfredo Brown:

I could see how the chemistry works with that group of people, especially because of everything that he has. Blue Beetles, like his suit, it's so technologically advanced And the powers of it, I feel like it works well with, like, a mister terrific guy, Gardner, Green Lantern, Hawk Girl. It just it does seem like it fits that niche of superhero.

JaggerMay:

Yeah. Yeah. It makes a lot of sense to me. Like I said, I I'm gonna give Blue Beetle a a shot, and I'm gonna treat it like a better version of Suicide Squad, not the Suicide Squad, but Suicide Squad, meaning that, like, it's a movie, and if someone like James Gunn got ahold of it, it would be better.

Alfredo Brown:

Yes. Yes. It actually works because, like, in that movie, Jaime Reyes is looking for a job. He's fresh out of college looking for a job, can't get a job. Like, what better way to start getting paid?

Alfredo Brown:

You're a superhero. Yep. Hop in. In this same interview with IMDb, James Gunn, when he was asked about the character, the interviewer basically said, I'm manifesting. I wanna see this character appear in upcoming seasons of Peacemaker.

Alfredo Brown:

And then James Gunn laughed and said, and said that he wouldn't say that he was not in luck. Lots of negatives in there, but basically, he kinda refused to comment but said, like, hey, you're not not in luck there. So either it's happening here or it could happen in a future season. Either way, James Gunn is teasing towards Blue Beetle being part of the DCU and potentially Peacemaker. So, Jack, I want to ask this.

Alfredo Brown:

We already have a Blue Beetle animated series that is on the schedule. You know, I know you said you haven't seen the movie, but how much Blue Beetle do you want in the DCU? The DCU? Do you want an animated series, a movie, or do you just kinda want him to be the guy that's involved with everyone else's stuff? Sort of like a Guy Gardner that just can be involved but not be the main character.

JaggerMay:

That's the joy of James Gunn. I just want an appropriate amount. I I I don't I if if if James Gunn wants to give me, an animated series and then, like, a tie in movie or then another live action series, fine. Because I know he's reading the scripts, and he's not gonna put out to use the same analogy that you've been using, he's not gonna sit send bad food to the window. You know?

JaggerMay:

Like, it's just gonna be fine. Like, I know I'm gonna like Blue Beetle. I'm just all in. I'm like, cool, man. At this point, how could you judge James Gunn?

JaggerMay:

If he's gonna use a big character like Superman, he's nailed it. If he's gonna do a obscure character like Preacher Commandos, nailed it. Like, whatever, man. I'm just here for the ride and ready to grab the popcorn.

Alfredo Brown:

I I'm gonna say this. I'm all in. I'm all in on Blue Beetle being in the DCU because I think it gives them so many different avenues they can explore. I love that we can explore the scarab, the origins of the scarab, going into space, meeting other creatures, Martians, every white Martians, green Martians, all of it. Like, we can we can go in so many different directions.

Alfredo Brown:

We can have a young justice type subplot going on here. He could be part of Teen Titans.

JaggerMay:

Teen Titans.

Alfredo Brown:

There's just there's just so many things. And we could get Jack, I think you've seen this, right, in the animated version of teen titans where we could get a blue beetle Jaime Reyes versus Damian Wayne fight. That was cool as hell to see an animated, like and you you bring up creature commandos is something else that James Gunn did where the gloves were off. You could say and do whatever on the screen in creature commandos because it's animation. I I think we sort of get the gloves off a little bit with a blue beetle animated series that allows this character to sort of do whatever we want.

Alfredo Brown:

We can retcon things in the animated series, give him a new origin in the animated series and say, okay, this movie going forward or this character going forward is our Blue Beetle. Now, do I do we necessarily need all that? No. I don't think so. I don't wanna have a lot of homework on a character.

Alfredo Brown:

But James Gunn is showing, like, he's not scared to do anything with these characters.

JaggerMay:

Yep. And and, again, James Gunn does a good job, but not I guess when you think about Guardians of the Galaxy, of course, you need to watch, all the the end game and stuff like that to get to Guardians Galaxy three, but you didn't know Rocket's backstory until literally the last fucking movie, and you didn't and that wasn't necessary. So and that's another thing that I think that I think works. Where, like, he retconned Justice League just like, alright. We're just gonna change this scene and kinda just move past it.

JaggerMay:

You know? So Did you

Alfredo Brown:

hear what he said initially that he just wanted to George Lucas the fuck out of it and just go back and digitally remove people? And he was like, ah, we'll just we'll do it in the previously on.

JaggerMay:

We'll do it in post. Yeah. Exactly.

Alfredo Brown:

That's funny. He turned it to who's the who's the the reporter? Was it Bill O'Reilly? It was just like, fuck it. We'll do it live.

Alfredo Brown:

Like, that was James Like, he was just ready to go, man. Yeah. Ready to go. Alright, man. Well, I I I'm really excited about this.
